But here's the thing: a certificate on the wall doesn't guarantee a single defect-free product. It's a framework, not a fix. If you're serious about quality, you need to know when ISO 9001 is enough and when you need the statistical firepower of Six Sigma.
Let's cut through the buzzwords. ISO 9001 is a requirements-based standard. It tells you what to do—document your processes, manage risks, plan-do-check-act—but not how to do it. Six Sigma is a methodology. It hands you a toolkit (DMAIC, control charts, FMEA) and says: go find the variation and kill it. They're not enemies. They're allies with different jobs.

Here's my recommendation: build your QMS on ISO 9001, then use Six Sigma for your critical processes. Don't treat them as either/or. The facts back this up: ISO 9001 is the most widely used QMS standard, with over a million certificates (ASQ). But that popularity doesn't mean it's sufficient. Quick tip: If you're just starting, don't chase Six Sigma belts before you have a QMS. You'll be solving problems that shouldn't exist.

Start with ISO 9001 to get your quality management house in order. Then deploy Six Sigma on the processes where defects hurt most. That's the pragmatic path.
